Some might argue he was even better than Gibbs.

Mark Harmon spent 19 years as NCIS Special Agent Gibbs, a role so iconic that it’s the first thing that comes to mind when many think of the actor. The show wouldn’t be what it is without Harmon, and fans will always appreciate his role in shaping its dynamic, which continues with the current cast.

However, Harmon’s filmography extends far beyond this one television hit. Over his entertainment career, he has appeared in numerous TV shows, including the medical drama Chicago Hope and the 90s NBC hit Reasonable Doubts. Yet, one particular role perfectly paved the way for his iconic NCIS character.

### Why Did Mark Harmon Play on The West Wing?

Created by Aaron Sorkin and originally broadcast on NBC, The West Wing was primarily set in the West Wing of the White House, following the presidential staff of President Josiah Bartlet’s Democratic administration. The show ran from 1999 to 2006, winning numerous awards, though Mark Harmon only appeared in four episodes. He portrayed Simon Donovan, an FBI special agent tasked with temporarily protecting White House Press Secretary C.J. Cregg after she received death threats via email. In just four episodes, Harmon and his co-star charmed viewers with their characters’ developing romantic feelings.

Unfortunately, Harmon’s run as Simon Donovan ended tragically when the character was shot and killed during an armed robbery at a convenience store.

Despite his brief screen time, Donovan’s storyline was compelling enough to earn Harmon a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series at the 2002 Primetime Emmy Awards. Though Harmon was already an established actor with several prestigious nominations, his role on The West Wing opened doors to more serious roles. NCIS was one of those opportunities, and by choosing it, Mark Harmon secured a role that would span nearly two decades.

For those interested in watching Harmon’s performance as Simon Donovan, The West Wing is available for streaming on Max.
