Despite its success, the thriving series continues to face backlash.
The NCIS universe is set to return to screens in a few months with several installments, including two brand-new spinoffs. However, the upcoming TV season looks less promising following the cancellation of NCIS: Hawai’i in April.
NCIS: Hawai’i was one of CBS’s most-watched series, but the network attempted to justify its cancellation with various reasons, leaving fans unconvinced. Ironically, the successful show was seemingly replaced by a less popular spinoff, though there’s a significant reason behind this decision.
NCIS: Sydney, the franchise’s first spinoff set outside the US, deserves credit for its authenticity, featuring an all-Australian cast and crew and focusing on NCIS operations in Australia. However, the show has divided fans; many US viewers believe canceling NCIS: Hawai’i for it was a mistake, while Australian viewers have praised NCIS: Sydney’s quality.
The network’s producers have noted Australians’ enthusiasm, hoping the spinoff will attract a broader international audience. While NCIS: Hawai’i was a fan favorite in the US, it likely didn’t perform as well globally.
Heartbroken NCIS: Hawai’i fans continue to campaign for its return, but it appears the show has passed the torch to NCIS: Sydney, which is officially getting a second season set for release later this year or in 2025.
However, there might still be hope for some characters from the canceled show. Before the new NCIS season and spinoffs debut, NCIS: Hawai’i’s Special Agents could potentially be transferred to other series within the franchise, allowing for a proper continuation or closure of their storylines.
