NCIS Star Wilmer Valderrama Shares Emotional Story of Wounded Soldiers and His Respect for America’s Heroes in New Memoir
In his new memoir, An American Story, NCIS star Wilmer Valderrama opens up about his profound experience visiting injured soldiers and his deep respect for the U.S. armed forces. Recalling his time at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany during a USO visit, Valderrama described the encounter as “sobering.”
“This is a trauma hospital,” Valderrama said. “Our service brothers and sisters have experienced combat, and here I was, walking through those rooms, just talking to them. It made me realize how incredibly brave our men and women are. Even as they’re wounded, they’re so proud to have been serving.”
One soldier recognized him as “Fez” from That ’70s Show in a moment Valderrama described as both funny and humbling. The soldier, despite his injuries, kept saying, “I just want to get back to my guys,” which left a lasting impression on the actor.
Reflecting on the experience, Valderrama said, “It reminds you that your purpose [as an entertainer] is to bring a level of serenity that allows for healing to happen and to bring a piece of home to them. It’s those moments that made me realize, ‘How can I serve my country?’”
His memoir, set to release on Sept. 17, tells the story of his journey as a young immigrant from Venezuela with dreams of making a difference in the world. Valderrama’s book serves as a tribute to his family, his career, and most importantly, to the country that gave him a shot at a brighter future.
“This is my thank you to America,” Valderrama said, “and to every person who has been part of this journey. This is for all of us.”
