In the November 4 episode of NCIS: Origins, Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid) faces intense pressure as an old case resurfaces. With an execution looming, Franks races against the clock to extract the location of a missing body from a death row inmate—honoring a promise he made to the victim’s sister before it’s too late. Below, Schmid shares insights into portraying Franks, previews the high-stakes case, and discusses the significance of mental health advocacy.

On Discovering Young Mike Franks:
Kyle Schmid: I’m learning who Franks is through each new script. It’s thrilling—and nerve-wracking—to open the next week’s script without knowing what’s coming, but the character’s depth has been amazing to explore. The writers have truly captured his voice, showing why Gibbs respected him so deeply. Playing a character with a huge heart and a fiercely loyal “family” in NIS feels like a privilege.

What’s Coming in This Episode:
Franks’ compassion is his strength and his burden. He made a promise to the victim’s sister years ago, and when he finally has the chance to make good on it, he’s torn apart by the emotional weight of his commitment. He takes responsibility for his words, and that integrity drives him—even if it’s painful.

About Franks’ Mysterious File and His Relationship with Vera:
Schmid: The file is a ticking time bomb—it could empower or destroy Franks. His trust in Vera (Diany Rodriguez) adds another layer, especially given the tension between them. It’s something I’m excited to see unfold.

On Movember and Mental Health Advocacy:
Schmid: I’m spearheading Men for Mental, encouraging men to openly discuss mental health and break the stigma around vulnerability. I’ve lost friends to mental health struggles, and after losing my mom last November, I realized how crucial it is to connect and have honest conversations. Partnering with Movember and Gillette, we’re creating awareness to help men feel less alone in their struggles. And yes, Franks’ mustache is here to make a statement too!
