CBS Sparks Outrage Among Fans After Canceling NCIS: Hawai’i for New Prequel Series

NCIS: Hawai’i fans were heartbroken when CBS canceled the series in 2024, and five months later, the network made the situation worse. The decision to end the show before its fourth season shocked both viewers and cast members, especially given its strong ratings and critical acclaim. Despite widespread calls to reverse the decision, CBS stood firm, leaving fans mourning the loss of a series that brought groundbreaking diversity to the NCIS universe.

With its dynamic cast led by Vanessa Lachey as Special Agent-in-Charge Jane Tennant, NCIS: Hawai’i provided representation sorely lacking in the franchise, which traditionally centers on U.S. military and government operations. The show’s focus on diverse characters and stories made its cancellation a particularly painful blow, especially in light of CBS’ decision to prioritize NCIS: Origins, a new prequel series that debuted in September 2024.

NCIS: Origins explores the early career of Leroy Jethro Gibbs and now occupies the Monday night timeslot formerly held by NCIS: Hawai’i. While the prequel expands on the franchise’s existing lore, many fans see its launch as a poor replacement for Hawai’i. Critics argue that Origins lacks the progressive representation that made Hawai’i so impactful. Ironically, an Origins episode titled “Incognito” even highlighted the importance of strong female representation, underscoring what the franchise lost with Tennant’s departure.

By canceling NCIS: Hawai’i in favor of Origins, CBS has drawn criticism for sidelining a show that championed inclusion and diversity in favor of one focused on revisiting the franchise’s past. Fans remain vocal about their disappointment, mourning the loss of a series that offered something truly fresh and progressive to the NCIS world.
