Mark Harmon Announces Return to Acting: Here’s What’s Next for the NCIS Legend

**Mark Harmon Returns to Acting**

Mark Harmon, known for his iconic role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs on “NCIS,” is stepping back into the acting spotlight. After departing from “NCIS” three years ago, Harmon has mostly stayed out of the limelight, focusing on his role as an executive producer for the franchise. Now, fans can look forward to seeing him on screen again, as he has signed on for a new movie.

Harmon will reprise his role as Ryan in the sequel to “Freaky Friday,” titled “Freaky Friday 2,” set to release in 2025. This marks his return to a character he played over 20 years ago in the original 2003 film alongside Jamie Lee Curtis.

This acting comeback could signify a broader return for Harmon, who signed with The Gersh Agency in 2023, joining a roster that includes Brendan Fraser, Allison Janney, Patricia Arquette, Adam Driver, and Mandy Moore.

**New Projects and NCIS Involvement**

In addition to his return to acting, Harmon will executive produce a new series, “NCIS: Origins.” This show will replace the recently canceled “NCIS: Hawai’i” and will delve into the early career of a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Although Harmon won’t appear on screen, he will narrate the series, much like Jim Parsons narrates “Young Sheldon.”

“NCIS: Origins” will star Austin Stowell as the young Gibbs, with Robert Taylor taking over the role of Jackson Gibbs, originally played by the late Ralph Waite. Kyle Schmid will portray Mike Franks, a character previously brought to life by Muse Watson on “NCIS.” The cast also includes Patrick Fischler, Diany Rodriguez, Tyla Abercrombie, Mariel Molino, and Julian Black Antelope. The series will be helmed by veteran producers Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North.

**New Book Release**

Harmon has also ventured into writing. He recently co-authored a book with NCIS technical advisor Leon Carroll Jr. titled “Ghosts of Honolulu: A Japanese Spy, A Japanese American Spy Hunter, and the Untold Story of Pearl Harbor.”
