NCIS has been a ratings powerhouse for CBS, maintaining its dominance for over two decades and spawning numerous successful spinoffs. While compelling cases have drawn viewers in, it’s the acting and unforgettable characters that truly set the show apart. One such character, Donald “Ducky” Mallard, became a fan favorite, thanks to the vision of producer Don Bellisario and the talent of veteran actor David McCallum. But bringing McCallum to the show wasn’t an easy sell.
CBS Didn’t Want David McCallum as Ducky
During the casting process, Bellisario was certain McCallum was the perfect choice for the role of Ducky. However, CBS executives strongly disagreed, feeling he wasn’t a good fit for the procedural drama. The exact reason was unclear, but former CBS Head of Casting Peter Gold speculated that McCallum’s Scottish background may have been a factor. “I think it was because David McCallum was British,” Gold told The Hollywood Reporter. “The feeling was, ‘Can you do that? This was such an American show.’”
Despite the network’s reservations, Bellisario refused to back down. He believed so strongly in McCallum’s ability that he threatened to walk away from the project entirely. “Don said, ‘If you don’t [cast McCallum], we’re not doing the show,’” recounted James Whitmore, a former NCIS director, in the same interview. Ultimately, CBS relented—and Bellisario’s gamble paid off in spades.
A Legacy of Gold
McCallum proved to be more than a good choice; he became an icon. His portrayal of Ducky endeared him to fans for 20 years, cementing his place as one of the most beloved characters in NCIS history. For many viewers, his work on NCIS became his defining screen credit, introducing him to a whole new generation of fans.
McCallum’s death in 2023 marked the end of an era, and CBS honored his memory with a heartfelt statement. “David was a gifted actor and author, and beloved by many around the world,” the press release read. “He led an incredible life, and his legacy will forever live on through his family and the countless hours on film and television that will never go away.”
Thanks to Bellisario’s unwavering belief in McCallum, fans were gifted with two decades of an unforgettable Ducky. It’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role, and we’re grateful we never had to.
