In a recent interview, CBS’ Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach discussed the potential return of Mark Harmon to “NCIS.” Harmon portrayed Agent Leroy Gibbs for 19 seasons before stepping away from the role.
Reisenbach stated that the “door is always open” for Harmon’s return, emphasizing that the decision ultimately rests with him. However, she expressed reservations about incorporating flash-forwards featuring Harmon in the upcoming spin-off, “NCIS: Origins,” noting that it doesn’t align with the show’s current direction.
These remarks echo sentiments shared by NCIS showrunner Steven D. Binder, who emphasized the desire to make Harmon’s return to the series a significant event rather than a brief appearance. Binder emphasized Harmon’s pivotal role in the show and expressed enthusiasm for the prospect of bringing him back in a meaningful capacity.
While Harmon may not be returning on-screen for “NCIS: Origins,” he will serve as an executive producer alongside his son, Sean Harmon, who conceptualized the show. Sean, who previously portrayed a younger version of Gibbs, expressed excitement about exploring his character’s early years and bringing a fresh perspective to the beloved figure.
Narrated by Harmon, “NCIS: Origins” will delve into Gibbs’ early career as a special agent at the NIS Camp Pendleton office. Austin Stowell will lead the cast as young Gibbs, alongside Kyle Schmid as NCIS legend Mike Franks and Mariel Molino as Special Agent Lala Dominguez.
“NCIS: Origins” is slated to premiere on CBS and Paramount+ as part of the fall lineup, although an exact release date is yet to be announced.
