Why Kate Todd And Tony DiNozzo Jr. Weren’t In The NCIS’ 1000th Episode

NCIS’ milestone 1000th episode took a nostalgic trip back to its roots by referencing the very first case Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ team tackled in 2003. Michael Weatherly’s DiNozzo and Jessica Steen’s Todd were part of the investigation, even though the latter wasn’t officially part of the agency yet. Instead, Todd was with the Secret Service aboard Air Force One when sleeper agent Leonard Riche attempted to assassinate the president. While the presence of either Todd or DiNozzo would have been fitting for the homage, both were notably absent from the episode, just like Gibbs.

There were compelling reasons behind CBS’s decision not to bring back either character. Todd’s character met a tragic end, murdered by Ari Haswari, Ziva’s half-brother, in the NCIS Season 2 finale, leaving fans shocked as she was a lead character. Though Sasha Alexander returned via archival footage, creative challenges hindered her full return. As for Weatherly, his recent return as DiNozzo for Ducky’s farewell episode meant the show opted not to rush his comeback.

Despite their absence, the 1000th episode didn’t forget to honor Todd and DiNozzo’s significant contributions. Both were featured in a special montage at the episode’s end, highlighting their importance to the agency’s history, as Director Leon Vance reflected on their impactful roles. While Weatherly’s return to the franchise is confirmed with his spinoff alongside Cote de Pablo’s Ziva, there’s no news on Alexander’s potential comeback.
