NCIS is set to explore Leroy Gibbs’ backstory in the new prequel series Origins, and it turns out Sean Harmon, Mark Harmon’s son, played a key role in its creation. Sean, who has appeared as a younger Gibbs on the show, will executive produce Origins alongside his father. He credits his idea for the series to a fascination with Gibbs’ past and the influences that shaped him.
Sean told TV Insider, “Exploring Gibbs’ backstory offers a chance to understand why he became the leader he is.” In a separate chat with ET, Sean gave Mark Harmon the credit, saying, “My dad has been a huge influence on me, and none of this would be possible without him.”
Austin Stowell will portray the younger Gibbs, and he’s been working closely with Mark Harmon to get the role right. “Mark Harmon has set a high bar,” Stowell admitted. “Getting to know him has been crucial as I step into his shoes.” Harmon’s advice? “Trust yourself.”
