In a poignant homage, NCIS honored the legacy of David McCallum’s iconic character, Donald “Ducky” Mallard, in Monday’s episode following the actor’s passing on September 25 at the age of 90.

As anticipated from the teasers, the episode titled “The Stories We Leave Behind” commenced with Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen, who co-wrote the episode) discovering Ducky’s lifeless body in his home, adorned in his signature monogrammed pajamas, with his faithful corgi nearby.

Reflecting on Ducky’s passing, Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) remarked back at NCIS headquarters that departing quietly in one’s sleep isn’t the worst fate. Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) emphasized Ducky’s fulfilling life and expressed the desire to celebrate it.

True to Vance’s sentiment, the episode delved into nostalgic flashbacks from previous seasons, echoing Ducky’s poignant assertion that “we all die twice; when our bodies give out, and again when our stories stop being told.” Viewers revisited memorable moments, including interactions between Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), and Gibbs.

Amidst reminiscing, the team embarked on a new case involving a soldier named Danny, whose reputation was tarnished by an ambitious councilman named Allan Berger. Suspecting foul play, the team uncovered a web of deceit and corruption, ultimately vindicating Danny’s name and bringing justice to his memory.

As the case concluded, the team gathered for Ducky’s memorial. In a heartwarming gesture, DiNozzo presented Palmer with a symbolic gift — a bowtie reminiscent of Ducky’s attire in the lab, signifying their enduring friendship.

The episode concluded with a touching title card honoring McCallum’s memory, reflecting on his lasting impact on the show: “In memory of our dear friend and colleague David McCallum. We will miss you.”
