LL Cool J on NCIS: Los Angeles: Why He Thought the Show Would Fail and How It Affected His Music

LL Cool J’s unexpected journey with NCIS: Los Angeles has been full of surprises. Initially, he believed the show would quickly fizzle out, just like his previous TV stint on the short-lived In the House. Instead, NCIS: Los Angeles became a massive success, leading LL Cool J to remain committed to the show far longer than anticipated.

The show’s surprising longevity meant LL Cool J couldn’t balance his acting with his music career. He revealed that juggling both proved challenging, particularly when his 2013 album “Authentic” suffered due to his split focus. “You can’t be a part-time artist,” he admitted, highlighting the difficulty of managing both worlds.

As NCIS: Los Angeles concluded its 14-season run in May 2023, LL Cool J reflected positively on the show’s success. He expressed no regrets, saying, “It’s not hard at all. We had an amazing run. I couldn’t complain, I have nothing [to complain about].”

LL Cool J’s character, Sam Hanna, also made appearances in the short-lived NCIS: Hawai’i, which ended in May 2024. After wrapping up his role, LL Cool J returned to music with his critically acclaimed album The Force, released on September 6, 2024. The album marks a triumphant return to his roots, showcasing his renewed focus and talent.
