A special callback to the original NCIS recently brought Mark Harmon back to the set of the franchise’s new prequel series, NCIS: Origins. The spinoff explores the early career of Harmon’s iconic character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, long before he led the high-energy team fans know today. Austin Stowell stars as the younger Gibbs, but Mark Harmon’s legacy lives on as he remains closely involved as both narrator and executive producer.
Acknowledging fans’ enduring love for his portrayal of Gibbs, Harmon made a cameo on NCIS: Origins, bridging past and present in a touching scene. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Harmon admitted that returning felt “different,” as the show’s early 1990s setting marked a new chapter for Gibbs. When asked about more possible appearances, Harmon was open, saying, “I don’t know. I just know that I’m going to try to help the show in any way I can.”
Harmon’s dedication to the series shines through in key decisions, including casting Stowell as young Gibbs. Harmon joked about their similarities, noting that “when he walked into the room, you felt the room bump a little bit.” Stowell brings his own spin to Gibbs, even though certain classic traits—like Gibbs’ famous head slaps—are off the table, with Stowell humorously noting he hasn’t yet “earned” the right to use them.
The series has already captured fans’ attention, with 5 million viewers tuning in for the premiere. NCIS: Origins, airing on CBS, follows Gibbs as a rookie special agent in 1991, joining a rough-and-tumble team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid) at Camp Pendleton. The show offers fans a nostalgic dive into Gibbs’ origins, reintroducing a beloved character in a whole new light.
