Mark Harmon’s Surprise NCIS: Origins Cameo Sparks Speculation About His Return to Acting

Mark Harmon, best known for his iconic portrayal of Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS, has been deeply involved with the new prequel series, NCIS: Origins. Serving as both a producer and the narrator for the show, Harmon’s influence remains central, even as Austin Stowell steps into the role of a younger Gibbs.

In a surprising twist, Harmon recently made a cameo appearance as Gibbs on Origins, despite previously stating he’d closed the chapter on playing the character onscreen. According to sources close to the actor, Harmon enjoyed his return so much that he’s reportedly considering additional appearances in the series.

Harmon’s Evolving Post-NCIS Plans

After exiting NCIS during Season 19 in 2021, Harmon shared that he felt he had fully explored Gibbs as a character. However, a source revealed to Closer that retirement hasn’t been as fulfilling as the actor anticipated, noting he’s grown “bored” without the challenges of steady work. “He finds working with his former colleagues a lot more stimulating than staying home with a list of repairs to be done,” the insider claimed.

Harmon’s cameo in NCIS: Origins isn’t the only project on his plate. The actor is set to reprise his role opposite Jamie Lee Curtis in Disney’s Freaky Friday 2, marking his return to the big screen after over 15 years.

What’s Next for Gibbs and NCIS?

While Harmon’s narration on Origins is confirmed to continue, the possibility of more cameos raises fan hopes for further involvement, both in the prequel and potentially even the flagship series. A return to NCIS proper could provide fresh storylines and renewed excitement for long-time viewers, even if limited to a few episodes.

However, these developments remain speculative for now. While the idea of more Gibbs appearances is thrilling, the report from Closer should be taken cautiously, as no official announcements have been made. Fans can, however, look forward to seeing more of Harmon behind the scenes and hearing his familiar voice narrate NCIS: Origins each week.
