After leaving NCIS, Mark Harmon traded acting for writing, stepping into the role of author. Initially, there was talk of Harmon maintaining his connection to the show by penning a book about it, but he had other ideas.

Harmon exited NCIS on a high note after portraying Leroy Jethro Gibbs since the series’ 2003 debut. His departure seemed to reflect a desire to explore new opportunities, and he was content with the way Gibbs’ journey concluded. “What has always drawn me here is the character I play and keeping it fresh and challenging,” Harmon told Entertainment Tonight. “Plot-wise, this character took the path it did. I thought it was honest, and I was OK with it.”

Post-NCIS, Harmon was approached by publisher Harper Select to write a book specifically about the show. However, he declined. “When they asked, ‘Would you write a book about the show?’ I said, ‘No,’” Harmon shared with Parade.

Instead, Harmon proposed a book inspired by the real-life NCIS organization, echoing the show’s original concept. “I was interested in revisiting what I was told this was originally going to be—every episode based on a real case. That idea was part of what drew me to the show in the first place,” he explained.

Harmon’s pivot to writing highlights his creative evolution while staying true to the essence of what made NCIS resonate.
