Mark Harmon Returns to NCIS Universe with Exciting New Role!
More than 20 years after debuting as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Mark Harmon is stepping back into the NCIS world in a fresh capacity. After leaving the show in 2021 during Season 19, Harmon is now set to be the narrator and executive producer for the upcoming spin-off, NCIS: Origins, premiering October 14 on CBS.
At the TCA panel on Saturday, Harmon expressed his excitement, saying, “I’m just pleased to be part of it. I’m not there to make any big moves; I’m just there to support.” He shares executive producer duties with his son Sean Harmon, who inspired the spin-off and previously played a younger Gibbs. Austin Stowell will portray Gibbs in the new series.
Harmon praised the new cast and expressed confidence in their abilities: “I love this cast and what I’ve seen on set.” He remains an EP on the original NCIS, grateful to CBS for allowing the show to grow despite early challenges.
Reflecting on his early days with NCIS, Harmon recalled, “We had a young family, and I wanted to stay home more. I didn’t expect to do a TV series, but I loved the character and the name, Leroy Jethro Gibbs.” He appreciated CBS’s support during the show’s formative years, acknowledging that other networks might not have given them the same chance to succeed.
