Since his departure in 2021, NCIS fans have eagerly awaited Mark Harmon’s return as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Their wish is finally coming true.
Harmon, who portrayed Gibbs from 2003 to 2021, will make a special appearance in the upcoming spinoff NCIS: ORIGINS, which delves into the character’s early career as a young agent.
Co-showrunner David J. North confirmed the exciting news, revealing that new footage of Harmon was shot for the prequel, which premieres on October 14 on CBS. “That was a discussion between Mark, myself, and Gina Monreal,” North said. “I hope the audience will be excited to see him after so many years.”
Though Harmon’s screen time will be limited to the premiere, he will narrate the entire series and serve as an executive producer.
NCIS: ORIGINS is a prequel set in the 1990s, exploring Gibbs’ backstory in a grittier, more serialized format than previous NCIS installments. CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach noted the show has a unique identity while staying true to the NCIS franchise’s roots.
Harmon expressed his gratitude for being part of the project, admitting he’s happy to support the cast from a distance. “I’m just pleased to be part of it,” he said, adding that he’s stepping back to allow the new cast to shine.
