NCIS star Michael Weatherly initially didn’t mind playing second fiddle to lead Mark Harmon both on and off screen. Weatherly’s character, Tony DiNozzo, served as a dependable second-in-command to Leroy Gibbs, mirroring their dynamic behind the scenes. However, as years passed, Weatherly grew weary of his supporting role on the show.

Despite Harmon receiving top billing, Weatherly eventually bid farewell to NCIS after its 15th season, driven by a desire to explore new creative avenues and step out of the shadow of perpetual second place.

Reflecting on his decision, Weatherly admitted feeling constrained by the No. 2 slot, recognizing the inevitability of his departure. Post-NCIS, Weatherly assumed the leading role on the CBS series Bull, where he experienced stark differences between being first and second in command.

Transitioning from a supporting to a leading role, Weatherly observed a shift in access to information, noting that as No. 1, individuals are often shielded from certain details, whether due to legal concerns or to avoid burdening them. Despite these differences, Weatherly admired Harmon’s efforts to remain integrated and informed, even as the show’s top star.
