Michael Weatherly Joked That ‘NCIS’ Was Better Off Not Being the No. 1 Show on TV

NCIS soared to become the No. 1 show on television, but Michael Weatherly saw some downsides to the massive success. The early days of the series were a different story, as Mark Harmon once revealed. The show struggled to find its footing, surviving because it wasn’t bad enough to get canceled or good enough to draw too much attention.

“We shot in Santa Clarita, and no one from the network wanted to drive out there,” Harmon quipped.

But by Season 3, NCIS hit its stride, and soon it was the most-watched show in the country. Despite this, Weatherly admitted in a resurfaced TV Fanatic interview that he preferred when NCIS wasn’t quite at the top. “No. 3 is kind of better,” he joked. “They’re not gonna cancel you, but now everyone’s watching—like getting the ball in football.”
