During their time on NCIS, Tim McGee (Sean Murray) and Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) went from having a rocky start to becoming close friends. Initially, DiNozzo often made McGee the butt of his jokes, but over time, their relationship evolved into one filled with camaraderie and mutual respect, creating many fan-favorite moments. Behind the scenes, Murray and Weatherly also formed a strong bond, often pulling pranks on each other. One of the most memorable practical jokes involved Weatherly using Cliff protein bars to resemble human waste and placing them in Murray’s trailer toilet. In response, Murray concocted a revolting surprise using Cliff bar chunks, boiled egg yolk, and chili, leaving Weatherly horrified.
Despite these stomach-churning pranks, their friendship remained strong. Weatherly even returned as DiNozzo for a special Season 21 episode honoring Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard (David McCallum). Reflecting on the reunion, Murray shared with TV Insider how meaningful it was to work with Weatherly again, saying, “It was like being warped right back to the old Tony-McGee stuff.” He also spoke about their enduring friendship, noting that they stay in touch regularly and that their connection made the reunion even more special.
With upcoming NCIS prequels and spin-offs, fans are eager to see if Murray and Weatherly will have more chances to reunite—both on and off the screen.
