### NCIS Fan Theory: Heartbreaking Reason Behind Agent Knight’s New Job
When NCIS premiered in September 2003, four of the five main characters had already been introduced in JAG’s “Ice Queen” and “Meltdown.” The exception was Sasha Alexander’s Caitlin “Kate” Todd, who debuted in the pilot “Yankee White.” Initially a Secret Service agent, Kate joined Gibbs’ team but was tragically killed by terrorist Ari Haswari in Season 2’s finale—a moment made even more memorable by Michael Weatherly’s accidental flinch during filming, which made it into the final cut.
Weatherly and Cote de Pablo recently launched *Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch* podcast ahead of their reunion for *NCIS: Tony & Ziva*, a Paramount+ exclusive spinoff. In the podcast, Weatherly revealed that he instinctively flinched just before Kate’s on-screen death, a small reaction that wasn’t edited out.
Now, a new fan theory suggests a heartbreaking reason for Agent Jessica Knight’s (Katrina Law) plot twist in the Season 21 finale. Knight was offered the role of chief training officer on the other side of the country, a decision that strained her relationship with boyfriend Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen).
A Reddit user speculated that this storyline might be setting the stage for NCIS to end, as it appears to be giving characters closure. The theory gains traction as the CBS and Disney+ series returns in September 2024. Fans speculate that while the main series might conclude, one or two spinoffs could take its place.
Despite this, many believe NCIS will continue as long as it remains popular. Some argue that Knight’s departure is just a temporary plotline, as Katrina Law is still under contract. Others point out that CBS would likely keep the show running due to its success.
In any case, fans are eagerly awaiting the return of NCIS and the debut of *NCIS: Tony & Ziva*, where Weatherly and de Pablo’s characters reunite on the run across Europe. Filming for the spinoff begins this summer, though a premiere date has yet to be announced. Meanwhile, NCIS Season 22 is set to premiere this fall, along with *NCIS: Origins*, a prequel following Leroy Jethro Gibbs in 1991.
