Despite its substantial fanbase, NCIS: Hawai’i was canceled in April 2024 after three seasons. While cancellations often mark the end of a show’s run despite fan outcry, there are numerous examples of shows that have been revived due to strong fan campaigns. From period dramas to comedies, here are some notable examples of shows that made a comeback after being canceled:

Community

Set in a quirky community college, Community gained a loyal following thanks to its hilarious and endearing characters: Jeff, Annie, Abed, Troy, Britta, Shirley, and Pierce. Despite some production challenges—including a showrunner change in season four, which was later reversed in season five—NBC decided to cancel the comedy before a sixth season. However, the show found new life when Yahoo! Screen revived it to complete its six-season run. Fans also got a bonus with a feature film on Peacock, reuniting almost the entire original cast, including Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong. As Abed Nadir might say, “Six seasons and a movie!”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine charmed audiences with its ensemble cast and the antics of the detectives at the 99th precinct. Despite its popularity and strong fan support, the show was unexpectedly canceled by Fox after five seasons. Fortunately, NBC stepped in, and the series continued for three more seasons, concluding with its finale in 2021.
