Contrary to popular belief, NCIS did not start as a stand-alone series. Created by Donald P. Bellisario, the show began as a spinoff of the now somewhat forgotten CBS legal drama series, JAG.
### When Did JAG End?
JAG, which stands for Judge Advocate General in the U.S. military, premiered on NBC in 1995. While it didn’t achieve the monumental success of NCIS, the show’s move to CBS significantly bolstered its storytelling and appeal. JAG ultimately ran for 10 seasons, concluding in 2005. The series depicted the daily cases of the Office of the Judge Advocate General of the Department of the Navy, focusing on Judge Advocates prosecuting and defending criminal cases under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, all set in the Washington metropolitan area.
Starring David James Elliott, Tracey Needham, Catherine Bell, and Patrick Labyorteaux, JAG received praise from U.S. media outlets and critics for its realistic portrayal of the military justice system. Given this acclaim, it was no surprise that the show produced a successful spinoff. NCIS was introduced through two JAG episodes in 2003.
### The Legacy of JAG and NCIS
Nowadays, the majority of NCIS fans may not have any recollection of JAG, focusing more on the various NCIS spinoffs. However, for those interested in the origins of the series, JAG is a perfect choice to explore.
Fortunately, one of the most iconic legal dramas of the ’90s is available to watch on Paramount Plus. For those without a Paramount subscription, the first season of JAG is also available on Prime Video. This might be enough to determine if JAG is to your liking.
