“NCIS”’ Longest-Running Castmember Sean Murray Says His Fate on the Show Is Uncertain: ‘You Never Know’ (Exclusive)

Despite being the longest-running cast member on NCIS, Sean Murray admits he doesn’t take his place on the show for granted. As the franchise approaches its milestone 1,000th episode, Murray, 46, shares with PEOPLE that his future on the series remains uncertain.

“Even after 21 seasons, I don’t know where my journey will end,” Murray reveals. “We’ve seen over the years that no one is truly safe on this show.” He expresses his gratitude for the time he’s spent on NCIS, noting that the cast is currently enjoying themselves and has no immediate plans to leave.

The landmark 1,000th episode, airing on Monday, April 15, prompts Murray to reflect on the show’s success. He attributes the franchise’s longevity to the high quality and care put into its development. “A strong foundation was built early on, and the show’s unique strengths set it apart from other procedurals,” he says. Murray believes the show’s “family feel” and its connection with fans were key factors in its enduring popularity.

Murray also notes that the franchise’s success has led to the creation of four spinoffs: NCIS: Los AngelesNCIS: New OrleansNCIS: Hawai’i, and NCIS: Sydney. “Each series has carved out its own unique niche,” he explains. “It’s fascinating to see how the franchise has expanded.”
