Mark Harmon, the longtime star of NCIS, is making a significant return to acting after a hiatus. While he has stayed largely out of the public eye since leaving his iconic role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, he’s set to reappear on screen in an exciting new project.

Mark Harmon’s Acting Comeback

Mark Harmon, who portrayed Gibbs for the first 19 seasons of NCIS, has been primarily focused on his role as an executive producer within the franchise. However, he is now gearing up to make his return to acting. Harmon will star in Freaky Friday 2, the sequel to the beloved 2003 film Freaky Friday. In this sequel, he reprises his role as Ryan, the fiancé of Jamie Lee Curtis’s character, Tess Coleman. The film is slated for release in 2025, marking over two decades since Harmon’s original appearance.

This move signals a potential resurgence in Harmon’s acting career. In 2023, he signed with the Gersh Agency, joining a roster that includes stars like Brendan Fraser and Allison Janney. Alongside his acting return, Harmon continues to contribute to the NCIS universe as an executive producer of NCIS: Origins. This new series will explore the early days of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’s career with NCIS, with Harmon narrating but not appearing on screen.

What to Expect from NCIS: Origins

NCIS: Origins will delve into the origins of Gibbs’s character, focusing on his start at the Pendleton branch of NCIS. Mark Harmon will narrate the series, which he is producing with his son, Sean Harmon. The cast features Austin Stowell as the younger Gibbs, Robert Taylor as Jackson Gibbs (replacing the late Ralph Waite), and Kyle Schmid as Mike Franks.

Other cast members include Patrick Fischler, Diany Rodriguez, Tyla Abercrombie, Mariel Molino, and Julian Black Antelope. The show will be run by NCIS veterans Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North.

Harmon has also ventured into writing, co-authoring Ghosts of Honolulu with NCIS technical advisor Leon Carroll Jr.
