Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ Potential Return to NCIS: Insights from Mark Harmon
More than two years after leaving the MCRT in NCIS Season 19, fans eagerly anticipate the return of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, played by Mark Harmon. Harmon is set to make a comeback in the NCIS universe, not by reprising his iconic role, but by narrating the upcoming spinoff series, NCIS: Origins. This prequel explores Gibbs’ early years with Mike Franks’ NIS team.
Despite this narration role, many fans hope to see Harmon back as Gibbs in the main series. During CBS’ TCA Summer Press Tour, Harmon addressed the possibility in an interview with TV Line. Given his involvement with NCIS: Origins, it seems feasible that he could make a cameo in the main show. However, Harmon himself is unaware of any plans for Gibbs to return to the MCRT.
Reflecting on his departure and potential return, Harmon shared: “It wasn’t so much a decision to leave, but the right timing to push away a little bit. I was thrilled with the storyline they came up with and how they handled the character. And the show continued on. I have been asked that a lot… I’ve always let the writers do what they want to do. Directly, like a phone call…? Not that I’m aware of. I don’t know [if I’ll be back for the eventual series finale]. I don’t think he’s still standing in the stream. [Chuckles].”
While Mark Harmon remains a part of the NCIS family through his narration role in NCIS: Origins, his future as Gibbs in the main series remains uncertain. Fans will have to wait and see if the beloved character makes a return to the screen.
