Sean Murray’s Surprising NCIS Journey: From One-Time Guest to Franchise Icon

As NCIS gears up for its 22nd season this fall, the show continues to thrive, joining the ranks of primetime hits with over 250 episodes and more than 450 episodes. Amidst the ever-changing cast, Sean Murray has remained a constant as Special Agent Timothy McGee. Remarkably, Murray’s initial goal was simply to make it to Season 2.

Murray joined NCIS in Season 1, making his debut seven episodes in. Reflecting on his early days, he told Variety he was hopeful to return for the next season: “I remember finishing Season 1 and saying to Mark Harmon and the team, ‘I hope I see you guys next year.’” His wish was granted, and he was upgraded to a series regular in Season 2.

Murray’s transition from guest star to mainstay was seamless, and his character’s evolution added fresh dynamics to the show. “McGee started as a one-time guest, a rookie helping with a case, and gradually became a core part of the team,” Murray explained. “He was like a new slice of the team, filling an important role and creating new interactions.”

Despite some characters leaving or being written off, Murray has remained with the series, and there’s no current indication he’ll be departing soon. With NCIS showing no signs of slowing down and expanding its franchise, there are always opportunities for Murray’s McGee to shine, even if he ever does take a step back.

As the show continues, fans can look forward to McGee’s ongoing adventures. The NCIS Season 22 premiere is set for Monday, October 14, at 8 p.m. ET, followed by the debut of the NCIS prequel series, NCIS: Origins. After over 1,000 episodes and two decades, the NCIS franchise is going strong, promising even more thrilling stories and beloved characters.
