In NCIS Season 22, Episode 4, “Sticks & Stones,” Curtis Hubley steps in to assist the Major Case Response Team (MCRT) and emerges as the standout candidate to eventually replace Timothy McGee. The storyline places Curtis in a situation that showcases his loyalty, technical skills, and commitment under pressure. The team finds themselves on the verge of preventing an international crisis, with Curtis working tirelessly to intercept threats, even defying orders and evading capture by the FBI. His actions and personality resonate strongly with McGee’s earlier days as an ambitious, loyal, and tech-savvy agent. Curtis is particularly adept in MTAC, where his skills in digital forensics are invaluable to the team, much like McGee’s talents were in his early career.

Given McGee’s current arc, vying for a promotion to Deputy Director—a position he ultimately doesn’t secure but remains in contention for—Curtis’ presence becomes increasingly relevant. With McGee’s years of service and desire to advance his career, it’s clear that his current position in the field could feel restrictive. Curtis could be an ideal protégé for McGee, providing an opportunity for a mentor-mentee dynamic that mirrors McGee’s own introduction to the team under Gibbs.

The show also seems to be preparing for a potential future without McGee, though there’s no indication yet that Sean Murray, the actor who portrays him, will depart anytime soon. If McGee ultimately does secure a promotion, the show’s existing structure would necessitate his exit from Parker’s team, creating a natural opening for Curtis. Integrating Curtis into the team over time would allow viewers to adjust, paving the way for him to seamlessly become MCRT’s new tech specialist.

The introduction of Gabriel LaRoche as the new Deputy Director raises additional questions. His apparent lack of impact so far, combined with suspicions of him being a mole, could lead to a shake-up in the leadership, possibly benefiting McGee. However, regardless of what happens, it’s clear that Curtis’ increasing involvement could provide McGee with the legacy of a successor, allowing him to eventually pursue higher ambitions without leaving MCRT understaffed.

In essence, NCIS seems to be positioning Curtis as the next tech expert in line for MCRT, ensuring that the team remains in capable hands should McGee eventually move on to a new chapter in his career. This move allows the show to explore McGee’s career growth while preparing the team’s continuity for the future.
