Although the saying goes, “Life imitates art far more than art imitates life,” Wilmer Valderrama’s career proves the opposite to be true. In his new memoir, An American Story: Everyone’s Invited, Wilmer reflects on how his real-life experiences have influenced his work, especially his 20-year commitment to the USO, where he now serves as a Global Ambassador.
Long before he was cast as Special Agent Nick Torres on NCIS, Wilmer was dedicating his time to supporting the armed forces through the USO. When the opportunity to play a Naval investigator came along, he was able to draw from his interactions with service members during his tours. “When I started working on the book, I reflected on my time with the USO and the many individuals who made an impact on my life, teaching me about service and showing up for your country,” Wilmer told Parade. “The book is a tribute to them.”
An American Story also delves into Wilmer’s personal life, particularly his family’s journey. Born in Miami but raised in Venezuela, Wilmer moved to California with his parents, who sacrificed everything to give their family a shot at the American dream. “It was important to honor their sacrifice and show that it paid off,” he said. The memoir also touches on his experience as a Venezuelan immigrant who came to the U.S. without knowing English, and how he rose to fame playing Fez on That ’70s Show while still in high school. He hopes his story will shine a positive light on immigration during a time of heated debate, highlighting the hard work and contributions that immigrants make to the country.
Discussing the book’s title, Wilmer shared, “An American Story: Everyone’s Invited represents the unity I saw during my time with the military, where differences faded and common values took center stage. Despite today’s focus on what divides us, I wanted this story to reflect perseverance, grace, and the opportunity this country offers to those who work hard for it.” He hopes that his story of resilience and paying it forward will resonate with people from all walks of life, reminding readers that everyone is welcome in the American story.
