NCIS, CBS’s iconic police procedural, has been captivating audiences for an incredible 21 seasons. Since its debut in 2003, the series, which follows the Major Case Response Team (MCRT) of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in Washington, D.C., has solidified its place in television history. Created by Donald P. Bellisario and Don McGill, NCIS has become a staple of the crime drama genre, and it’s nearing two decades of airing.
For much of its run, the series was anchored by Supervisory Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, portrayed by Mark Harmon, who became the face of the show. However, in October 2021, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Harmon would no longer be a series regular, with episode 4 of season 19 marking the end of Gibbs’ storyline—at least for now.
Despite his departure from the show, Mark Harmon’s impact on NCIS is undeniable, and his co-stars have consistently praised him for his professionalism and leadership both on and off the set. David McCallum, who plays Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, credited Harmon with fostering a positive and productive work environment throughout the years. Michael Weatherly, who played Tony DiNozzo for 13 seasons, also lauded Harmon for being “straightforward, approachable, calm, and assertive.”
Cote de Pablo, who joined the cast in season 3 as Special Agent Ziva David, echoed these sentiments, calling Harmon “very easy to work with.” Even Mark Harmon’s real-life wife, Pam Dawber, who played Marcie Warren in later seasons, spoke highly of him, saying in 2021, “Mark is the best for everyone and everything. His ego doesn’t extend. He just wants everything to work.”
Though Mark Harmon’s time as Gibbs came to an end, his presence on the show has left a lasting legacy. As the leader of the MCRT and the series’ lead actor, Harmon’s role on NCIS extended far beyond just portraying Gibbs. His leadership on set and dedication to the show is something that fans—and his co-stars—still feel to this day. While Gibbs may no longer be at the helm, Mark Harmon’s influence on the show and its cast remains immeasurable.
