The world mourned the loss of “NCIS” star David McCallum, whose passing at 90 marked the end of an era for television. McCallum’s storied career spanned decades, with notable roles in iconic series like “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” “Colditz,” and “Sapphire & Steel.” However, it was his portrayal of the lovable Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard on “NCIS” that endeared him to audiences worldwide.
Sadly, McCallum’s farewell on “NCIS” didn’t match the grand send-off afforded to his co-star Mark Harmon. Despite sporadic appearances in the most recent season, McCallum’s final performance in the Season 20 finale, “Black Sky,” marked the end of an era.
While his role in the episode was minor, Ducky provided crucial information to Alden Parker (Gary Cole) and Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll). Yet, it’s evident that Ducky’s presence had diminished in the years leading up to McCallum’s final appearance, appearing in only four episodes of Season 20 and following a similar trend in previous seasons.
In a candid interview with Radio Times in November 2022, McCallum admitted feeling disconnected on set, especially after many of his co-stars had departed. “When I go there, it’s like being in a different show,” he confessed. Executive producer Charles Floyd Johnson acknowledged McCallum’s reduced presence, citing difficulties and suggesting retirement might be on the horizon.
Despite never officially retiring, McCallum’s passing came amidst the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, preventing him from recording additional scenes for the show. Whether he planned to return or not remains unanswered, but fans can celebrate his 20-year tenure on “NCIS” and the numerous memorable episodes featuring Ducky.
