Gary Cole Reflects on Smooth Transition from Gibbs to Parker on NCIS
For nearly two decades, NCIS thrived with Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs at the helm, making his departure in Season 19 a momentous shift. After appearing in the first four episodes of that season, Harmon stepped back, leaving fans and producers alike wondering if the show could endure. To everyone’s relief, NCIS adapted, with Gary Cole stepping into the role of Alden Parker, the new team leader. Gary Cole on Parker’s Introduction
In a recent interview on Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch podcast, hosted by Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, Cole shared his thoughts on how the show handled the passing of the torch from Gibbs to Parker. He reflected on the collaborative dynamic between the two characters during Season 19:
“Mark, I guess, wanted to leave… But then he agreed to begin the 19th year and do four shows while they brought in this other character. I think the way they did it was smart, because rather than him leaving and then one day there’s a knock on the door, ‘Hi, I’m the new guy,’ we did shows together involved in the same case. He worked for the FBI, and they were working in tandem and they had conflict and all.”
Rather than abruptly introducing Parker as Gibbs’ replacement, the writers opted for a storyline where the two worked side by side, easing viewers into the change. This narrative choice allowed for a natural transition, avoiding the jarring shift often seen in similar situations.
The Key Difference Between Gibbs and Parker
Cole also revealed advice from NCIS executive producer Mark Horowitz, which helped him shape Parker’s leadership style:
“Horowitz said something which made sense… If Mark was the stern father that everybody was afraid of and/or trying to please, this guy was the crazy uncle… He’s got the title of leader, but he’s only using authority when necessary. Otherwise, he’s just another guy in the room trying to relate to everybody.”
This fresh dynamic provided a lighter tone compared to Gibbs’ more stoic leadership, giving Parker a distinct identity while maintaining continuity within the team.

While some initially feared that Harmon’s departure might spell the end for NCIS, his brief return in Season 19 and behind-the-scenes involvement as an executive producer helped steady the ship.
