Tony DiNozzo, played by Michael Weatherly, is one of NCIS‘ most beloved characters, but he hasn’t been part of the show for several years. Here’s why he left and when he might return.
Tony DiNozzo’s final regular appearance on NCIS was in the Season 13 finale, “Family First.” In this episode, Tony learns of the presumed death of his partner and love interest, Ziva David, in a bombing. Amidst his grief, he discovers he has a daughter, Tali, with Ziva. Deciding to prioritize fatherhood and search for Ziva, Tony resigns from NCIS.
Michael Weatherly’s departure from the series in 2016 was driven by a desire for new career challenges. After 13 seasons, Weatherly sought a fresh direction, which led him to star in CBS’s Bull, where he remained until 2022. His exit from NCIS was amicable and part of his broader career shift.
Weatherly did return as Tony DiNozzo in a Season 21 episode of NCIS, honoring the passing of Ducky Mallard and offering guidance to the current team before focusing on his daughter.
Excitingly, Tony DiNozzo is set to make a major comeback. Weatherly and co-star Cote de Pablo will reprise their roles as Tony and Ziva in a new untitled NCIS spinoff, which began filming in June 2024. This spinoff will follow the continued adventures of Tony, Ziva, and their daughter, Tali.
So, while Weatherly left NCIS for new opportunities, fans can look forward to seeing Tony DiNozzo return in the upcoming spinoff series.
