Why Gibbs Doesn’t Appear In NCIS’ Ducky Tribute Episode

In a poignant tribute to the late David McCallum, NCIS Season 21 dedicates an entire episode to honoring the beloved character of Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard. Rather than simply reminiscing, the team embarks on a mission to solve one of Ducky’s last cases, highlighting his enduring impact on the team even after his passing. With Ducky’s extensive history working alongside various iterations of the NCIS team, fans anticipated the return of original cast members for this special tribute.

Given Gibbs’ longstanding friendship with Ducky, dating back before the events of the show, he seemed like the natural choice to lead the tribute. However, instead of bringing back Mark Harmon, NCIS surprised viewers by recruiting Michael Weatherly’s Tony DiNozzo. While many options were considered for a cameo, DiNozzo, known as the “Very Special Agent,” was selected to provide support to Jimmy Palmer.

Although Gibbs’ appearance would have added emotional depth, CBS opted for DiNozzo to inject levity into the episode. Through his trademark humor and heartfelt wisdom, DiNozzo helps Palmer navigate the grieving process and find solace in remembering Ducky’s legacy. Despite the deviation from expectations, DiNozzo’s presence brings a touching tribute to a beloved character and actor.
