Eric Christian Olsen’s New Chapter: From NCIS: Los Angeles to Producing Matlock

The May 21, 2023, finale of NCIS: Los Angeles might be the last time we see Eric Christian Olsen on screen for a while. The versatile actor-writer-producer is now focused on his role behind the scenes, prepping for the launch of the new Matlock on CBS.

Olsen, who has spent 13 years working with CBS, is excited about the opportunity to tell stories from a producer’s perspective. At the Television Critics Association press tour for Matlock, Olsen shared his enthusiasm:

“I’ve had so many experiences with CBS, and this platform allows me to build stories I’m passionate about from the ground up. It’s a wonderful opportunity to solve complex problems with empathy and grace, and I had to take it.”

Despite his passion for producing, Olsen admits he misses acting. Watching the Matlock set from behind the monitor, he often finds himself wishing he could be in front of the camera.

“I see Kathy Bates delivering incredible performances, and it’s hard not to be tempted to jump back into acting. There are moments when I have tears in my eyes watching her work,” Olsen told Parade. “But we have so many projects in development, and while I miss acting, I truly enjoy what I’m doing.”

Olsen remains involved in the creative process by standing in for missing actors at table reads, often taking on villain roles. He also finds himself drawn to the dramatic and comedic scripts crafted by Matlock showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman, feeling a strong urge to perform her beautifully written scenes.

“I secretly imagine myself in those roles because Jennie’s writing is so compelling,” Olsen said. “There are speeches that make it hard not to say the words myself.”

His producing role with Cloud Nine Productions—which previously brought Woke to Hulu for two seasons—reflects skills he learned from his mother. “She taught me to anticipate problems and approach them with kindness and empathy,” Olsen explained. “That’s a different perspective than acting, where you’re not part of the entire process.”

Regarding a potential collaboration with his former co-star and sister-in-law, Daniela Ruah, Olsen is open to the idea of having her direct an episode of Matlock. “I’m sure we’ll find a way to bring Dani in,” he said. “The first season is always challenging, but with success, I’d love to have her direct.”

Olsen has also kept in touch with his NCIS: Los Angeles co-stars, including LL COOL J and Renée Felice Smith. “I still listen to Todd’s new music, and I was overwhelmed by it recently,” Olsen shared. “After 13 years, you end up seeing your co-stars more often than family. I actively miss Todd, and I was texting with Renée this morning. I see Dani all the time since she’s married to my brother.”

Matlock will air a sneak peek episode at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday, September 22, before settling into its regular 9 p.m. Thursday timeslot starting October 17.
