Mark Harmon’s Departure Almost Ended NCIS, but He’s Still Calling the Shots

Mark Harmon, beloved for his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS, nearly caused the series to collapse when he stepped down in 2021. His departure sparked immediate concerns about the show’s future, with discussions among creators about possibly ending the series altogether.

Gary Cole, who replaced Harmon as Agent Alden Parker, revealed on the Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch podcast that the transition wasn’t easy. “There was talk that they would just end it,” Cole admitted, adding that the creators had to scramble for a solution. Harmon briefly returned in Season 19 to help ease the handoff, appearing in a few episodes that integrated Parker’s introduction into the team’s dynamic. “I think the way they did it was smart,” Cole noted, praising the storyline’s seamless transition.

Years after his departure, Harmon remains deeply involved with the franchise. As an executive producer, he played a pivotal role in launching NCIS: Origins, the latest spin-off exploring Gibbs’ early career. “I just know that I’m going to try to help the show in any way I can,” Harmon said, following a cameo appearance in the new series.

However, Harmon’s continued influence behind the scenes has sparked mixed reactions. A source told Radar Online, “For someone who said three years ago he was retiring, Mark’s still very immersed in the franchise and must have a say in everything from casting to plot lines.” While some appreciate his guidance, others reportedly find his involvement frustrating, with insiders noting, “He’s got opinions to share with the younger generation and isn’t afraid to dish out report cards.”

Love him or not, it’s clear that Harmon’s fingerprints remain all over the NCIS universe—even from afar.
