With Mark Harmon’s Gibbs no longer on the show, there’s renewed hope for a beloved character’s return.
Throughout its extensive television history, CBS’ police procedural giant NCIS has seen many characters come and go, leading to constant renewals of the main team.
The conclusion of season 21 left fans on a cliffhanger regarding Jessica Knight’s potential departure from the MCRT, and possibly the entire series. As fans speculate about suitable replacements for Knight, a recent real-life encounter between two former cast members has reminded everyone of another beloved character who could return, though not to fill Knight’s role.
Pauley Perrette, who portrayed the MCRT forensic scientist Abby Sciuto, recently posted a picture on Instagram of herself reuniting with her former co-star Brian Dietzen, who plays Jimmy Palmer. Perrette, one of the original long-standing characters on NCIS, left the show in season 15 after her character decided to step away from the job that once jeopardized her life.
Rumors at the time suggested that Perrette had major irreconcilable disagreements with Mark Harmon, who portrayed Leroy Jethro Gibbs and left the series after season 19.
Despite her absence, Perrette is still missed by her co-stars and the crew. CBS executives have expressed that the actress would be welcome back if she chose to return, even though Abby’s position is now held by Kasie Hines, the current MCRT forensic scientist. There’s potential for Abby’s reintroduction in a part-time role, especially if the team faces a crisis or needs additional support on a serious case.
With Mark Harmon officially off the show and showing no signs of returning, the path seems clear for Perrette to reprise her role if she wishes to do so.
