In early 2024, CBS shook up the television landscape with the revelation of a groundbreaking addition to the NCIS franchise: NCIS: Origins. Departing from the franchise’s tradition of multiple spinoffs, this fresh installment takes a novel approach as a prequel series, heralding Mark Harmon’s return to the franchise following his departure in 2021. While the premise of the Gibbs-centric prequel is known, much of the series remains shrouded in mystery.
Mark Harmon, alongside his son Sean, takes on executive producer roles for the series. Although Sean Harmon previously portrayed Gibbs in flashbacks, he won’t reprise the role in Origins. Mark Harmon’s involvement is anticipated to be limited to narration, given that the show is set in the 1990s, making his physical appearance highly improbable. Writers David J. North and Gina Lucity Monreal are tasked with penning the premiere episode and will co-showrun the series.
