“Mark Harmon Reveals Surprising Reason for Joining ‘NCIS’ Cast”

Mark Harmon, known for his iconic role as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs on “NCIS,” recently shared a fascinating insight into his decision to join the hit CBS series back in 2003.

Despite initially not expecting to be drawn to the script, Harmon confessed that it was the character’s name, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, that caught his attention. “I read ‘Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ and thought, ‘Huh, I like that name,'” he recalled.

However, there was a brief moment when the character’s name was considered for a change, prompting Harmon to insist that it remain Leroy Jethro Gibbs. “I went, ‘No, no, it’s gotta be Leroy Jethro Gibbs,'” he emphasized.

Harmon also revealed that being able to spend quality time with his family, particularly enjoying Saturday morning breakfasts, played a significant role in his decision to take on the series. Despite the demanding schedule, he cherished the moments he could share with his loved ones.

Reflecting on his departure from the show in 2021, Harmon expressed openness to the possibility of returning, teasing Gibbs’s mysterious whereabouts in Alaska. He joked, “He’s probably sitting in a stream up in Alaska fishing.”

As “NCIS” celebrates its 20th anniversary, Harmon reflected on the unexpected longevity of the series, acknowledging the hard work of the cast and crew. “I don’t know that any of us thought that the show was going to be around as long as it’s been around,” he remarked.
