Mark Harmon recently discussed his potential return to the role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs in CBS’ upcoming series, NCIS: Origins, during the Television Critics Association summer press tour on July 13. Reflecting on his 2021 departure from NCIS, Harmon told US WEEKLY, “It wasn’t so much a decision to leave, but the right timing to push away a little bit.” He expressed satisfaction with how his exit was handled, stating, “I was thrilled with the story line they came up with and how they handled the character. And the show continued on.”
When questioned about the possibility of returning to the new show, Harmon acknowledged the frequent inquiries but emphasized his trust in the writers, saying, “I have been asked that a lot. [But] I’ve always let the writers do what they want to do.”
In an earlier interview with TVLine, Harmon addressed the idea of a comeback to NCIS, mentioning that he hadn’t received a direct invitation: “Directly, like a phone call? Not that I’m aware of.” He also shared his thoughts on the series finale, commenting, “I don’t know. It’s really about feeling like you’re fulfilled with a role or complete with a role.”
Mark Harmon first appeared as Gibbs in 2003 and remained the lead for 18 years. Discussing his departure in an August 2022 interview for the season 19 DVD release, he said, “What has always drawn me here is the character I play and to keep it fresh and to keep it challenging.” He concluded by noting, “Plot-wise, this character has taken the path that it did.”
