Mark Harmon is making a surprising return, but not to his iconic NCIS role. Instead, he’s reprising his part as Ryan Coleman from the 2003 family comedy Freaky Friday. Fans of the actor and the show will be thrilled to know that after years of speculation, Disney has officially announced a sequel to the beloved movie.
Set to hit theaters in 2025, the sequel will reunite original stars Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. Disney recently shared a behind-the-scenes photo of the duo, who will be back as mother-daughter duo Anna and Tessa Coleman. The 2003 film, which grossed over $160 million worldwide, remains one of Lohan’s biggest hits.
Director Nisha Ganatra will helm the new film, which also promises the return of cast members Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. Joining them are new faces like Manny Jacinto, Julia Butters, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Sophia Hammons.
Fans are already buzzing with excitement. Under Disney’s Instagram post, comments poured in with enthusiasm, including one fan exclaiming, “My 2025 has just been made!” and others praising the film’s return, saying, “Freaky Friday is one of my absolute favorites. I laugh SO much every time I watch it!”
Mark Harmon, who left NCIS in 2021 after 19 seasons, had previously hinted at the sequel’s possibility during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. He credited Jamie Lee Curtis for reviving interest in the film, noting, “If she’s talking about it, then it will happen.”
Aside from his role in Freaky Friday, Harmon has remained active. He’s continued his work as an executive producer on NCIS and has ventured into writing with his debut historical nonfiction book, Ghosts of Honolulu: A Japanese Spy, a Japanese American Spy Hunter, and the Untold Story of Pearl Harbor. He’s expressed his passion for history and its connection to the real-life origins of the NCIS, explaining, “This is the first story leading to the birth of what became the real NCIS. These agents are really a different breed.”
So while fans won’t see Gibbs back on NCIS for now, they can look forward to seeing Mark Harmon in the much-anticipated Freaky Friday sequel.
