Sean Murray has been portraying Timothy McGee on *NCIS* for nearly the entire series, starting as a recurring character in Season 1 before becoming a series regular in Season 2. Over the past two decades, McGee has evolved significantly, and with the upcoming Season 22, which premieres soon, Murray will officially become the actor with the most appearances in the franchise’s history. This season will also focus on McGee’s pursuit of a major promotion, although his path will be complicated when he uncovers something suspicious.

As revealed earlier, Jessica Knight’s decision to become the new REACT instructor at Camp Pendleton in the Season 21 finale triggered a “chain reaction” that has the main team scattered at the start of Season 22. Showrunner Steven D. Binder shared with TVLine that McGee’s journey towards becoming an NCIS deputy director will take a turn when he uncovers something unsettling within the government. Known for his investigative skills, McGee may stumble upon corruption or a larger conspiracy affecting not just NCIS, but possibly other areas of the government.

Though Director Leon Vance is not suspected, the discovery could sideline McGee’s promotion ambitions as he grapples with the unfolding shadiness. While fans hope McGee will eventually achieve his goal, his integrity and dedication to his team are likely to take precedence.

Season 22 also promises to delve into other storylines, including the mystery of the little girl Alden Parker hallucinated in the Season 21 finale, Nick Torres embarking on another undercover mission, and Jimmy Palmer and Jessica Knight having a long-awaited conversation about their relationship. The premiere episode, titled “Empty Nest,” airs Monday, October 14, followed by the extended debut of the prequel series *NCIS: Origins*.
